I am pleased that the Charity Insights part of the 2026 World Giving Report provides internationally comparable data and statements from the perspective of non-profit and charitable organisations.

I was not surprised that international funding sources play a less significant role for German organisations (section 5). Our own data from the Transnational Giving Program confirms that German non-profit organisations are less active in international fundraising. I also found it interesting that German organisations perceived the role of donors as less empowering and more focused on the demanding side (reporting, requirements) (section 6). Whether German donors utilise their empowering role less and, therefore, remain more focused on the demanding side is an interesting question.

Overall, the German organisations surveyed seem to struggle more than their international counterparts with impact measurement and recording (section 11). This aligns with our observations and experience. What surprised me, however, was that German organisations, who tend to trust the state, attribute a less positive influence to them in comparison to the global average.
